With the clock already ticking, TMS was engaged to support the NBL x NBA Melbourne Series just 36 hours before the NBA team touched down in Australia. With no opportunity for conventional planning or extended stakeholder engagement,
delivery relied instead on experience, established relationships and the ability to perform under pressure.
Compounding the challenge was the significance of the event itself. This marked the first time a National Basketball Association team from the United States had played in Australia, creating a global spotlight and exceptionally high
expectations. While the NBL, supported by Visit Victoria, had engaged venues, accommodation, Melbourne Airport and a coach supplier, there was no single organisation overseeing and integrating all ground transport operations.
What was missing was a calm, experienced hand to bring structure, coordination and confidence to a fast-moving, high-security environment, and to ensure the experience met the standards expected of a landmark international sporting
event.
TMS responded with the same service-first mindset that underpins all of our major event operations. Within 12 hours of engagement, our team developed a comprehensive Transport Operations Plan outlining stakeholders, staffing, communications protocols and service levels, which was quickly endorsed by both the NBL and NBA.
To deliver the operation, TMS mobilised experienced personnel from across Australia and New Zealand, supported by a dedicated local team. We immediately established detailed scheduling and dispatch processes with the appointed bus supplier, introduced clear communication channels, vehicle signage and rapid driver briefings, and engaged directly with Melbourne Airport to manage the international charter arrival.
Critical to success was our ability to quickly integrate with a wide range of stakeholders, including venue operators, security providers, Victoria Police and local authorities. Through decisive leadership and clear coordination, we ensured that every venue, transfer and security requirement was aligned and understood, creating a transport operation that appeared seamless to players, officials and spectators alike.
Despite the compressed timeframe and complexity of the operation, the transport program was delivered smoothly and without incident. While the number of vehicles was modest, the operation involved multiple venues, tightly managed movements and a significant security overlay, including canine vehicle sweeps and highly controlled arrival and departure points in busy Melbourne locations.
The success of the event was underpinned by the long-standing relationships TMS has built across the events, transport and security sectors, as well as the trust and experience of a team that has worked together on major events for decades. These foundations enabled TMS to step in at short notice and deliver with confidence.
